With new fully integrated point-of-sale hardware coming soon, POS software built on React Native’s application framework, and powerful new marketing tools that make it easier to get products found by local shoppers, this is the best version of Shopify POS yet.
Last year, we rebuilt Shopify POS from the ground up, so that each merchant had the same feature-rich experience, backed by the world’s best ecommerce platform. For Shopify Editions, Summer ’22, we’re announcing new features for Shopify POS—the only point-of-sale system that seamlessly connects to your Shopify store and helps you sell everywhere your customers are.
“With digital advertising costs rising and consumers coming back to stores, there’s never been a better time for brands to invest in physical retail. But selling in person is still harder than it has to be,” says Arpan Podduturi, Director of Product for Shopify Retail and Messaging. “That’s why we’re introducing the most accessible and scalable version of Shopify POS yet, designed to help brands of all sizes run a thriving retail operation.”
“First, we’re making selling in person more accessible, with Tap to Pay on iPhone. Second, we brought Shopify POS to 11 new countries, so brands around the world can run their retail operation on one platform. Third, we’re making it easier for brick-and-mortar retailers to get discovered by local shoppers, with Google local inventory sync. And soon, we’re launching all-new enterprise-grade POS hardware that will help brands sell everywhere their customers are, with a best-in-class checkout experience.”

Selling in-person just got easier
It’s more straightforward than ever to start selling in-person and build your retail empire with Shopify. Our all-new, fully integrated hardware helps you get set up faster, sell wherever your customers are, customize your retail experience as your brand grows, expand into new markets, and more.
Tap to Pay on iPhone
Pop-up shops are set to surge in the coming months, as more retailers look to leverage physical retail to drive customer loyalty and new customer engagement. To make selling in person easier for both entrepreneurs and seasoned sellers, Shopify is working with Stripe and Apple to help merchants securely accept payments using only their iPhone and the Shopify POS app for iOS.
Tap to Pay on iPhone is a new payment acceptance capability that lets you accept contactless credit and debit cards and digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, without any extra hardware. Powered by Shopify Payments, you can use your iPhone and accept payments wherever your customers are. Shopify Payments is PCI compliant and Tap to Pay on iPhone uses the built-in features of iPhone to keep your business and buyer data private and secure, so you and your customers can check out with peace of mind.
With Shopify POS and Tap to Pay on iPhone, you can start selling IRL faster, without having to set up additional hardware. This makes it easier than ever to open your own temporary retail location and connect with shoppers at a pop-up shop, local event, farmers market, festival, or wherever they are. Just download the Shopify POS app on your iPhone and you’re ready to go.

New Shopify POS hardware
Whether you have one store or 100, your hardware needs to be flexible, reliable, and easy to use. That’s why we’re releasing all-new Shopify POS hardware with fully integrated payment processing.
Coming soon, this enterprise-grade hardware will help brands with large retail teams that process a high volume of in-person transactions accept card and contactless payments, and ensure customers are served efficiently—whether it’s at the checkout counter or on the floor. It will also enable store staff to conveniently manage store pickup and delivery, inventory, and customers with a single device.
Shopify POS on React Native
We want everyone using Shopify POS to have the same experience, regardless of which device they use. That’s why we rewrote the Shopify POS app from the ground up with React Native’s mobile app framework. This foundational work helps us create new features and improvements faster and help Shopify merchants thrive.
Moving to React Native’s unified codebase means you’ll have access to the same Shopify POS features whether you use iOS and Android devices—like push notifications for local pickup and delivery orders, secure remote login capabilities, and more. This is the best, most responsive and reliable version of Shopify POS yet.
“The move to React Native helps Shopify POS meet the needs of merchants of all types of retail environments better,” says Ash Christopher, Senior Engineering Manager at Shopify. “Merchants will enjoy more new features that simplify store operations, more bug fixes and updates, and more responsive POS software, regardless of which device they use. For the end consumer, that means a better, more seamless experience when they shop with merchants using Shopify POS.”
Shopify POS available in 11 countries
Millions of merchants outside of North America use Shopify to power their online store. But when they want to sync their online store and native POS, they’re met with a clunky experience. Oftentimes, they use unreliable APIs and frequently jump between disparate systems to run their business.
That’s why we’re bringing the benefits of Shopify’s unified commerce platform to merchants outside of North America and launching Shopify POS—along with Shopify Payments and our all-new integrated hardware—in 11 countries.
We did this to help brands around the world unify their sales channels and make it easier to deliver a best-in-class customer experience online and in person. Now, more merchants than ever can manage their store’s day-to-day with the best version of Shopify POS yet, and run their entire brand from Shopify’s powerful back office.
Go from first sale to full-scale with Shopify
It’s never been easier to open more retail stores and run your entire brand in Shopify. Manage your inventory, staff, customers, and sales from one powerful platform.
Support for more store locations
Your POS system needs to support your retail operations no matter how big it gets. That’s why we designed Shopify POS to support larger brands with up to 50 store locations. And this is just the beginning. Soon, Shopify will support up to 1,000 store locations.
We’re doing this to help merchants of all sizes reduce operational complexity and run all of their store locations and sales channels from Shopify. Start a business on Shopify knowing that you can grow as big as you want and manage inventory, staff, and customers from one system of record.
“When we talk to established brands who have a large network of stores and sell on multiple channels, they often cite using third-party APIs to connect disparate systems as a point of frustration,” says Lindsay Rothman, Senior Product Lead at Shopify Retail. “APIs aren’t always reliable, require updates, and add a layer of complexity to workflows. Now, brands with large retail footprints can enjoy the benefits of unifying their sales channels with Shopify.”
Product metafields in Shopify POS
With the Internet at their fingertips, customers expect store staff to have product expertise above and beyond what they can find online. While learning about products used to be done through supplier training sessions, meetings, or between staff, we think there’s a better way to share product information with staff across multiple store locations.
Introducing product metafields—a fully customizable way to share product information like care instructions, restock dates, warranty details, or complementary products with customers and staff across each store location in Shopify POS.
Metafields in Shopify POS are designed to help you equip store staff with the information they need to serve customers with confidence. You have complete control on what to include in metafields, making them a flexible tool for sharing detailed information, resolving questions quickly, and building trust with customers, while reducing dependency on managers and more tenured staff.
Google Local Inventory sync
Searches including “shopping near me” on Google have grown three times over in the past two years. That’s why Shopify and Google are making it easier for merchants to be discovered by nearby shoppers, generate foot traffic, and grow their sales.
Hundreds of thousands of merchants have used Shopify’s Google channel to list their products on Google for free, run Smart Shopping campaigns and boost conversion with Buy on Google. Now, you will also be able to sync your store’s product catalog with your Google Business Profile to help local shoppers find in-store product availability—all from within Shopify.
With Google local inventory sync, shoppers can see essential information like stock availability, store location, operating hours, directions, and local pickup or delivery options. Then, shoppers can walk into the store knowing that the product they want is in stock, or they can buy the item online without leaving Google. This makes it faster and easier than ever for merchants to reach new customers and for customers to find and buy from local merchants.
We built this directly into Shopify’s Google channel to help merchants with a physical store get their stock in front of local shoppers at zero cost. When people search for businesses, listings can appear in Google Shopping, Google Search, and Google Maps. They can also pay for Local Inventory Ads to extend their reach.
“Our mission is to help retailers offer a world-class, unified customer experience,” explains Helen Mou, Product Lead at Shopify Retail. “We know that buyers are shopping and searching on mobile, and they are more focused on their local communities than ever before. This exciting new tool helps merchants get discovered by local buyers at zero additional cost, increase store foot traffic, and grow sales.”
