6 Ways to Stay Hydrated at Work (and Why It's So Important)

We all know that hydration is important for long term health – there’s no news on that front. But failing to hydrate properly has a more immediate impact, too.

Dehydration kills your productivity in a number of ways, particularly by:

  1. Causing headaches
  2. Contributing to chronic fatigue
  3. Destroying your attention span

But wait, it gets worse.

A dehydrated entrepreneur is a demotivated one. And that’s bad for business.

If you’re too busy nursing a headache or counting down the hours before you can take a nap, you can kiss goodbye to any progress being made on the professional front. In fact, if anything, your bottom line is going to suffer thanks to your lazy hydration habits.

Such is the importance of maintaining your wellbeing in the workplace.

Don’t fret too much though, because the good news is; hydration is easy. Here are five simple ways to stay hydrated at work.

1. The Watercooler

Seriously, it’s not just an office prop. If your workplace provides you with free water, it’s worth your while to grab a few cups throughout the day.

Leaving your desk for a moment will also benefit you, as sitting for prolonged hours should always be paired with getting up and stretching your legs every so often.

2. Super Size It

If you aren’t keen on constantly leaving your desk for cups of water, picking up a two litre bottle of the good stuff on your way to work each morning is a great alternative.

Leave it on your desk as a constant reminder to drink, and aim to polish it off before home time.

3. Tea & Coffee

If drinking water in its purest form bores you, switch to herbal teas, English tea, or coffee. Their high water content will get the job done.

Although there is some debate about how caffeine can affect hydration, it seems to be a negligible impact.

4. Skip the Soda

A smart way to hydrate includes drinking water with a meal – a practise which has been shown to improve appetite control.

So, next time you’re out for lunch, make sure the only soda you order is a club soda.

5. Fruit

Want to pair hydration with a healthy diet? A fruit is your best friend (forever).

Most – if not all – fruits are made up of a surprising amount of water. For example, Strawberries and Bananas are 92% and 74% water, respectively. So, keep a small fruit bowl on your desk for easy access to sweet watery treats.

6. Ice

Okay, so you’ve tried, but you just can’t resist the tangy goodness of a soft drink. The struggle is indeed real.

However, the least you can do is ask for some ice in your drink. This won’t be enough to keep you properly hydrated throughout the day, but it’s better than nothing.
