Content marketing is the most effective form of digital marketing today, which is why your brand needs a blog that’s buzzing with regular (and awesome) content. Sounds straightforward enough, right?
But as usual, it’s all far easier said than done.
Not because writing content is particularly difficult, but because thinking up great topics to discuss can sometimes be a real pain in the blog.
To help you come up with your next epic blog post idea, here are seven tips to supercharge your brainstorming powers.
1. Find Some Alone Time
I have a theory. We all rave about the increase in quality ideas we get whilst in the shower – and rightly so.
But I’m pretty sure it’s not the shampoo or the shower head that activates your creative juices. Instead, it’s the fact that you’re finally alone – away from almost every distraction that your mind so often grasps for (here’s looking at you, Netflix).
Now, take that idea, and run with it. Schedule alone time by taking a quiet walk through your local park, or a drive through your neighbourhood. No distractions, just lots of thoughts. It’s like having a shower, but without all the shower stuff.
2. Read Other Blogs
Checking out the competition is an excellent way to drum up blog post ideas.
Browse through the recent publications of your rivals – as well as their archives – for some highly targeted inspiration. Of course, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t directly copy anything, although the skyscraper technique is something you might consider.
3. Visit Forums
Here’s a tip you may not have considered before.
No matter what industry you work in, there’s bound to be at least one discussion board out there dedicated to it. And if you work in a popular industry – like digital marketing for example – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
To benefit from those online discussions, sign up to a few relevant forums and check out what the word on the digital street is. Focus on the hottest topics, and make note on what individuals ask for help with.
Before you know it, you’ll have a list of discussion points to build blog posts around.
4. Read Books
We’ve already covered the benefits of reading other blogs, but actual books can give you tonnes of blog post ideas, too.
Raid your library for books that revolve around your industry, or even books that discuss business in general. Even a quick look through the contents page may help.
And if you don’t have a library, you need to check out my list of ‘12 Books All Entrepreneurs Have to Read’.
5. Talk to People
I’ve lost count of all the times people have given me blog post ideas without even meaning to do so.
You can be direct about your approach by asking friends and family to hit you with ideas they would like to see you write about, or you can ask people questions about your industry to gauge which areas they find most confusing (or most interesting).
You could even reach out to business contacts with a full blown questionnaire to help you decipher what subjects deserve your attention.
6. Take Advantage of Creative Moods
If you suddenly find yourself scribbling down idea after idea, do yourself a favour – don’t stop.
Don’t stop to eat, don’t stop to think – damn it – don’t even stop to turn the page. Just keep writing.
You may not be in love with every idea you write down in that rare moment, but later on, they’ll serve as excellent inspiration to get you thinking of other ideas that may tickle your fancy.
There’s nothing quite like that ‘eureka moment’ which occurs when you think of a great blog post idea, and the six tips above will help you experience those moments more often.
