7 Steps to Building a Stronger Team


A strong team within your company helps the business increase revenues, work more efficiently and be more productive. Every person in your workforce should clearly know what their position is and what the job duties of that position are.

As long as all members of your team are on the same page and have the willingness to improve, your team will become an indestructible force to be reckoned with. If you are still working on building that dream team of employees, these eight steps will help you put the wheels in motion in a forward direction.

Delegate Tasks

Even though you are the boss, you hired employees for a reason. Delegate tasks to employees that have the skill set to complete them. Successful completion of the task may show you that the employee may have leadership potential.

Test your staff to learn their true abilities to ensure that you have the right people in the right roles by delegating tasks like problem solving and quality control. The boss has enough to do during a typical workday, giving up a few tasks gives you (the boss) some time to breathe and regroup.

Offer a Creative and Innovative Workplace

Employees that have a creative and innovative workspace are more productive, focused and dedicated to their positions. Take for example companies with dedicated social media teams for marketing and brand reputation purposes. Millennials are ideal for this role as 89-percent of 18 -29 year olds are active on social media.

This means they see ads from brands they follow, how much the trending stories impacts society and how to use those tactics to strengthen the marketing team.

Create Roles

Every person on your staff needs to have a title. Even if multiple people share the same title, there needs to be a defining line of who does what job. It is important that those in supervisory roles do not take their “power” to levels of discomfort or leave team members feeling less than stellar.

When creating these roles, especially when new roles are created, interview internally. Promoting from within can decrease a company’s turnover rate and creates longer lasting working relationships between team members.

Weekly Team Leader Meetings

Team leaders should hold weekly meetings. These meetings should discuss team performance, changes and should allow time for employees to provide creative ideas/feedback. The team members must have a voice and should be shown equal respect in these meetings. This promotes teamwork, stronger work ethics and creative fluidity. Creative minds working on the same track produce amazing results and creates stronger teams.

Set and Celebrate Meeting Goals

A successful business needs both short-term and long-term goals. Each separate team within the business should have its own productivity goals to reach too. As these goals are met, celebrate in some way whether it is a catered lunch, shortened workday with pay or bonuses.

Reward those who contributed in larger ways to successful goal completion too. This promotes team pride and keeps employees happy. When employees are happy, they work harder and work better together as a team.

Maintain Employee Satisfaction

While it is impossible to keep everyone happy all of the time, keeping a majority of them happy most of the time should be your goal. Consider sending out a weekly or monthly employee satisfaction survey that employees can complete anonymously. These surveys will tell you if your employees are happy with their positions, what they’d like to see improvement in and how management can motivate them better. Getting feedback from your employees is one of the best ways for you to lead by example so that the dream team you wish for will follow suit.

Complementing Skill Sets

A great team needs to be diverse. It also needs to have members with varying skill sets that complement each other. For instance, if you have one team member that is a great with analytics and another that is better with marketing, let them work together to create marketing teams since both efforts can create something compelling. Where one lacks some skill, the other excels so the end product is a cohesive compilation from several people working on one project.

Companies should focus on building teams based upon proven skills rather than written boasts of accomplishments elsewhere. Employees that have true pride for their workplace will stand out as leaders, innovators and creative minds that can help mold good teams into strong teams. Strong teams work like a well-oiled machine and work together to solve problems, develop new products and increase the efficiency of typical office practices like converting to cloud networks.
